ODNR is proposing to slightly modify the current horsepower at Burr Oak for the upcoming boating seasons of 2008-2009. The lake is involved in a pilot study. The modification would allow boats with motors in excess of ten horsepower to operate on the lake at NO WAKE SPEED. Under the current regulations, motors in excess of ten horsepower are not permitted to be operated on the lake.
No wake, as defined by law, has the same meaning as "Idle Speed" which means the slowest possible speed needed to maintain steerage or maneuverability.
No change is proposed for boats with motors of ten horsepower or less. Existing users will continue to operate as in the past.
The intent of this change is to allow greater fishing access without altering the quiet nature of the lake.
Burr Oak Lake was selected for the pilot study due to its size and location. There are few other lakes within the region that allow for boats with large motors to operate.
The Division of Parks and Division of Watercraft will work together to ensure increased law enforcement coverage on Burr Oak Lake during this pilot study.
The proposed horsepower limit change must first go through the division's administrative rule-making process which allow the public input.
The date for the public rules hearing on the proposed rule changes has not yet been set, but anticipated for later this spring.
The division will publicize the hearing date and where to send comments once the date, time, and location have been set.
The earliest anticipated time that this proposal would go into effect would be during the boating season of 2009.
